Find A Mover You Can Trust

Verify The License of The Moving Company

The NY State Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that all moving companies be fully licensed. To check the validity of a moving company's DOT certificate number call (800) 786-5368.

Contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB)

A responsible moving company should have a satisfactory BBB rating. They may have some complaints lodged against them but their BBB record should indicate that the company responds to and resolves complaints. Contact the Long Island BBB at (516) 420-0500 or visit the website at http://www.newyork.bbb.org.

Inquire about Workers' Compensation Insurance

The DOT requires that all moving companies retain Workers' Compensation Insurance. Be cautious of low estimates/bids from companies prior to booking a moving job, as premium costs may not be factored in to protect customers. A low estimate can be misleading. Contact the DOT at (800) 786-5368.

Verify the Address of the Moving Company

Confirm the address of the moving company. Occasionally companies use a fictitious address to gain business. This will tell you something about the companies integrity and professionalism.

Be Cautious of Telemarketers

Be wary of high-pressure tactics from telemarketers who are interested in making a sale. A high-quality company with a good reputation does not need to criticize its competition to make them look better. References are usually a fine way to help you make an informed decision.

Obtain Recommendations

It is best to get a personal or professional recommendation. Be wary of Internet based moving companies. They are sometimes misrepresented as being locally based when in reality they are operating out of state or as a booking agent without actual moving crews of their own.

Ask for an On-Site Estimate

Ask for an on-site estimator to come to your home/office to obtain an accurate estimate of the cost of your move. They are trained to assess your individual moving job and what it requires (i.e. packing, moving, storage, supplies, etc.).

LIMSA Membership Preferred

Ask if the company is a member of The Long Island Moving and Storage Association (LIMSA). LIMSA checks DOT certificates, Workers' Compensation Insurance coverage and overall consumer satisfaction, before accepting any moving company as an honored member.  Contact the LIMSA at (516) 248-0886.
